Now that Adam has poked the NORLUG mailing list about the existence of this web site, I feel inspired to write an update to be helpful and nice: I"m going to post an update as to the status of this group, in order to inform and potentially engage new members or prospective members. I haven't participated in the group for over a year, and not the current President, so consider this an unauthorized post, therefore prone to edits or corrections. I'm quite confident, however, that I'll be able to satisfy anybody's curiosity about NORLUG to the complete satisfaction of Steve, Adam, and Chip,

NORLUG hasn't met socially for over a year. Membership slowly diminished, but the mailing list is active (links on the right-hand site save me trouble from typing href tags and angle brackets).

There is, however, a way to breathe life back into the group as far as regular formal and informal meetings. As people move into and out of Northfield, at least 5% are bound to be Linux users. Effectively that means somewhere in Northfield exists someone who would like to start organizing meetings again. Meetings are not hard to set up. The Northfield Public Library for instance has generously allowed us to meet there in the past. A phone call, a post to the mailing list, and a meeting commences. A little note or two to the Northfield News, and an event submission to Northfield.org, and magically a new meeting appears with people knowing about it in advance and attending.

Interested persons should register on this site and post an inquiry on the NORLUG mailing list, and Adam will most likely set anyone up to accomplish things.

I haven't worked on Condiskcat for three years, and I haven't been working on my programming skills for that long either. Any interested C++ developers are welcome to take over the project.

Andy Alt was kind enough to send us three pictures from the November meeting. These came from some archaic process called 'film', which involves chemicals and dinosaurs or something.

Nov 6, 2006 - The recent release of Slackware 11.0 has found its way to the Northfield Library. I'm sure that every DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1 user is anxious to try it out, but please be patient - the Slackware 11.0 discs do not yet appear in the Northfield Library catalog.

We've migrated the mailing list today, from our internally, "Mailman"-hosted server, to Google Groups. Now there's searchable and RSS-able yummy-ness in the new list archives.

The transition was pretty transparent to the subscribers. Those who were subscribed to the old list, should have received an email about the new list. However, no one really needs to do anything differently.

I have two things to share with you this morning. The first is an excellent podcast I've discovered that deals with all things Linux and most things FOSS. Each episode tends to be in the neighborhood of thirty to forty-five minutes, and the host talks about all kinds of things from file system structure and how to use cron to compiling from source. It's called Linux Reality, it's geared at the beginning to intermediate Linux user, and it can be found at http://www.linuxreality.com/.

This is a data specialist position, looking for someone who can work with a variety of databases in a communications setting, and can learn more and grow to be able to trouble-shoot/advise others. We do a lot of consulting around a college admissions data/communications management program called Recruitment Plus. It?s a pretty entry-level position.
